Opal Jewelry - Why is It So Special?

Opal can be made into so many different items of boulder opal necklaces. Sure, we all know that there are opal pendants, opal rings, opal earrings and so on, but opals, as opposed to other stones like diamonds and rubies etc, can be made into special kinds of jewelry.

There is an opal variety from Australia called Koroit and this is an unattractive type of stone when we compare it to an Australian Black Opal. It is mostly a reddish, dark brown lump of ironstone with slashes of opal running randomly through it. A jeweler cannot do much with that you might think, but simply drill a hole through it and attach a hefty chain or a cheap leather thread and it makes a gorgeous chunky necklace and it looks great on men as well as women.

Then there is boulder opal which often comes as a piece of opal connected naturally to a piece of ironstone or sandstone. The opal stone is undulating and may not have any of the fire associated with gem quality opal but when we look at it closely it has a pattern that might look like a seascape or a view of a mountain range or all kinds of other things. It might be the kind of thing you just like to stare at and imagine seeing all kinds of things in. Try doing that to a diamond! The beauty of a piece like this is that it is not gem quality and is very inexpensive.

I love jewelry like that because not only is it cheap to purchase but when you wear it people ask questions about it and they want to have a close up inspection of it. It is a great conversation starter. You never get people asking you if they can they have a look at your topaz ring. They never say: "Oh, where did you get that ring?" But with a $40 necklace of cheap Koroit or Boulder Opal you will get strangers asking what sort of stone it is and where did it come from.

Then there is one of my favorites Opal Inlay Jewelry. Beautiful pieces of crystal opal are set into the metal of rings, earrings and pendants. The opal is finished off flush with the surrounding metal. We often see this with boring stones such as Onyx and other lame looking minerals with very little color. But, when you make inlay opal jewelry normally you would use high quality opal and the results are fantastic.

You can put nearly any other gemstone next to opal it and it will enhance the piece of jewelry. Opals with diamond accents will always look stunning. Conversely, you can have a pink topaz or emerald main stone with inlay opals on each side and you have a brilliant item of jewelry then.

Opals can be inlayed, prong set or bezel set. They can be glued in place where as other stones will not appear attractive this way.

One comforting aspect of opal jewelry is that the stone will be mined by lonely men or husband and wife teams living in harsh conditions in outback Australia. There are no big companies involved and there is no forced labor here. It is a labor of love. Think about the cutting of rubies and other stones which is often done by children who should be at school. I am an opal cutter and although it is labor intensive I enjoy doing it and I have never met an opal cutter who is not passionate about opals so there is a kind of love attached to these stones all the way through from the man underground in the middle of nowhere to the wife or enthusiast carefully cutting and polishing the stone.

Clarisonic Opal Sonic Infusion System Reviews

When it first appeared on the QVC's official shopping website, the Clarisonic Opal reviews Sonic Infusion System reviews made quite a stir that led to units moving as quickly as they were being stocked. As its creator asserts, the system fills in the small wrinkles around the eyes to produce a more youthful look. Nobody questioned why they needed a gadget to do that, the obscured assertion is that technology does a better job than the human's finger. The system comprehensively massages the cream into the fine lines around the eyes in such a way that a human finger is not able to.

Ease of Use

The system's visual appearance is not eye catching; as such, it looks like an amalgam of a Pedi egg and a lady's electric shaver. Nevertheless, it perfectly fits the palm of the user and is easy to use. Basically, all a user has to do is press the button at the top and it will deliver a dollop of anti ageing cream directly into the wrinkled eye skin area. The system operates by the use of a small motor that is a reminiscent of an electric toothbrush for approximately 30 seconds, at which time the user switches it to the other eye's skin and repeats the whole process once again. It is really as simple as that, exactly as it is advertised.

For maximum benefits, it makes use of an anti aging cream known as "sea serum" that is specifically designed for it. The idea behind this is that the wrinkles around the eyes will be reduced or done away with by filling them it up with a firming peptide while the rest is done by a hydrating sugar. Initially the results don't last for long. For some people, six hours seems to be the best they could attain, while with others, it has been reported to last for a maximum of eight to nine hours. Nevertheless, Clarisonic Opal Sonic Infusion System creators state that results vary from person to person and that a daily usage is a prerequisite to achieving a prolonged and a lasting overall effect.

The Tests and Results

After testing the system for three months, the length of time the treatment is said to work increased significantly to approximately nine hours. Moreover, the clients who tested it claimed that it became too expensive and were not about to cough up some extra money for another three months' supply of the cream as it cost them at least $100 for the two caps replacements while the results remained the constant nine hours. The initial cost of the system together with the specially designed sea serum cream comes to approximately $250 while a whole year's serum purchases sets a client back with another $400. Wow, that's really not an idea a frugally minded individual will take to.

In a Nutshell

All in all, the usage of the Clarisonic Opal Sonic Infusion System for the removal of wrinkles around the eye is decent and all who use claimed that it appeared to live up to exactly what it claims to do - giving a youthful appearance. Although the initial system's cost, the serum's replacement charges and the hassle of ordering it may be troublesome to some; those who love gadgets and have high disposable income are definitely going to enjoy using this device which keeps eye wrinkles at bay.

Opal Inlay Rings: Affordable Luxury

Rainbow opal earrings made with opals has become rather popular accessories. The availability of good quality stones, along with the mastery of skills needed to create splendid designs have made a beautiful opal inlay ring a much coveted commodity.

Now considered as an affordable luxury, opal jewelry offers no compromise on quality and creative workmanship. These are very exciting times for a consumer like me.

Opal is an eye-catching gemstone and I am especially fascinated that they can display the full color range of a rainbow. The uniqueness of its color play is just too good to ignore. It's not any more exclusive to people whose birthday is on the month of October. Opal has already caught a lot of people's fancy. And for some time now, it has become my favorite gem.

They make sensational jewelry, perfect if you want a fine-looking and unique piece for your collection. And if you're lucky, you could get them at an affordable price. The key is to know your opals and taking the extra effort to find the one.

An opal inlay ring is among the designs very fashionable these times. So if you plan to buy one, here are some things to consider:

- The ideal opal for inlaying is likely to be a fine quality crystal opal. An opal that is transparent so to see shimmers of color when you hold it against the light.

- If you have the right budget, you can opt for a black opal that is just divine for any kind of jewelry.

- Any metal setting will work for inlaid jewelry. Choose a setting thought that can provide stability, then beauty to your opal jewelry.

- If you opt to have accent stones, make sure they complement the opal. With opal as the center stone, it won't be a problem. Opal goes well with diamonds, rubies, and other precious stones.

- Consider the opal that you find most attractive and that fits your budget.

Browsing the web for opal jewelry, made me realize what I want for Christmas. I would definitely want to see a.96 carat black opal with diamond accents in 14k white gold setting around my right ring finger. Wearing rings around the index or pinky finger maybe vogue and meaningful but my ring finger would do fine. And yes, maybe a pair of matching opal earrings as well.

Opal Jewelry -- Your Own Personal Piece of Rainbow

Blue opal earrings is a magnificent gemstone whose shades encompass virtually every hue in the color spectrum. The play of color is different on every stone, and its shimmering hues gave rise to the word 'opalescent.' Because it is such an entrancing and unique gemstone, it is no wonder that opal jewelry is very popular among collectors and fashion enthusiasts.

Opal is the birthstone for October and its history is peppered with superstitions and beliefs that it caused both good luck and bad luck. In Europe, it used to be thought of as the 'official' stone of thieves and robbers. One of the greatest contributors to the myth that opal jewelry causes misfortune is a misreading of its depiction in Sir Walter Scott's 19th-century novel 'Anne of Geierstein.'

However, many cultures associate the opal with white magic and good fortune. The ancient Romans used opal jewelry as talismans and for them, it symbolized purity and hope. The ancient Greeks, on the other hand, believed that it gave the wearer the abilities to prophesy or foretell the future. It was also thought to bring luck to the wearer.

The popularity of opal jewelry is on the rise. Although it is classified as a semi-precious stone, the black opal can cost as much as a diamond. Opals can also range in price, depending on their color. Generally, red opals are the most expensive while blue opals are the least. Also, doublet or triplet opal jewelry, or a piece of opal that is sandwiched between two other materials is less expensive than solid opal pieces. Set in gold or silver, or embellished with other gemstones, there is a wide variety of opal jewelry to choose from.

Men and women throughout time have been fascinated and captured by the iridescent colors of opal jewelry. Bad or good luck notwithstanding, these multi-colored gems are worthy additions to any wardrobe. A person cannot be blamed for thinking that wearing an opal necklace, earrings, bracelet or ring is somehow just like having a piece of the rainbow close to the skin.

How to Get Men's Silver Bracelets Shining Again

Silver male opal bracelets are popularly sported by men and women for accessorizing themselves when heading out for casual outings. Silver jewelry is available in the form of pure or fine silver and sterling silver. Pure silver bears markings of 99.9 that serve as an indicator of the quantity of silver that is contained in every 100th or 1000th part of the piece. Sterling silver contains 92.5% of silver; the remainder consists of other metals, such as nickel, zinc or copper. As a result of sterling silver being alloyed with other metals, it is known to be more durable than silver jewels. However, the other metals in sterling silver jewels contribute towards its tarnishing.

Where jewelry for men is concerned, men's silver bracelets are preferred by the males. Nevertheless, the items could become tarnished over a period of time and they have to be cleaned for maintaining their shimmer.

In the following details, we share some tips for men on caring for their silver bracelets and having them shine brightly again.

Care Instructions

Tarnished silver jewelry bears a dull look and to keep them shining again, the use of silver polishing clothes is considered suitable, if the items are mildly or moderately soiled.

Take the silver polishing cloth and rub the silver bracelets by applying gentle pressure for preventing scratches on the metal. You must not use tissues or paper towels for rubbing the jewels because they are packed with fibers and can scratch the silver.

You must also ensure to use back-and-forth movements and not circular strokes for preventing the magnifying of the scratches. Also, be sure to change the cloth portions on a frequent basis so you avoid putting the tarnish back on the jewels. Consider using a Q-tip for reaching the smaller corners.

If your silver jewels are heavily tarnished, the use of aluminum foil is effective for doing a thorough cleaning job and getting rid of the darkened edges.

Take a bowl and put some aluminum foil at the base. Thereafter, place the silver items on top of the foil and follow by pouring lukewarm water over the jewels. Now, add some tablespoons of baking soda in the bowl and allow it to dissolve in the water. Let the jewels soak in the solution for 20 minutes or so. Then, rinse the items with plain water and wipe with a soft cloth. This cleaning method restores the luster and gleam of the items.

The ancient Greeks also believed that the opal brought about good luck and fortune to its wearer. However, the opal was not always thought of as a good luck symbol. in 19th century Europe, the opal was believed to have been the official stone of both thieves and robbers. The Opal - Nature's Most Beautiful Gemstone?

The Fire Opal Earrings is a fascinating gemstone to look at. While other stones and diamonds are also interesting in an aesthetic sense, they don't match up. The stone's play of colors changes with the angle you look at it, making it a gem that you can look at for hours! These flashes of colors are called opalescence and may be numerous or few and differing in size and type. It is these colorings that determine how much an opal is worth.

The opal is a gem mainly found in Australia. Almost 95% of the stones on the market are mined there, though Mexico, Brazil and a few American states also export the colored gemstone. There have also been recent finding in the African nations of Ethiopia and Mali, but the opal is an Australian stone first and foremost.

Opals are classified into two major groups: precious opals and common opals. Those that display the characteristic play of color are known as precious opals, while those lacking this - single color specimens - are known as common opals. Gems used for jewelry can be cut from both the common and the precious. Both precious and common opals come in many different forms and varieties. The absolutely must cherished opal is the black precious opal; with a black, dark blue or dark green main background coloring, with a play of colors to match. The second most popular precious opal is the white, which is white, cream or yellow color and with a strong internal play of color. The most valued common opal is the so called Mexican Fire Opal, which is a common almost translucent opal in orange red color.

Opals are used in jewelry and may be cut in thin slices that are put on a matrix material. Gems made this way are much cheaper than a solid precious opal and is a way to achieve the same display of color as a solid precious opal. The opal is a relatively soft stone, so a coating made of quartz is sometimes used in jewelry, to avoid scratches.

Opals As Gemstones - Australia's Finest Export

All of nature's colors and splendor is found in the rainbow opal earrings. The opal is the most colorful of all gems. All the colors of the rainbow may be found in it, along with the intense and mystical fire inside, that has made it so popular. The splendid play of colors is simply unsurpassed in other gemstones and for that reason, a particularly fine example of an opal may be worth even more than a diamond.

The opal is a thing of beauty to behold, its play of colors changing with the angle from which it is viewed. These different flashes of color are known as opalescence. These colorings may be large in one color or tiny and numerous. The distribution and intensity of these colorful flashes are what determines the value of the opal.

The stone is mainly found in Australia, where the mines supply up to almost 95 percent of all opals. The remainders of the opals on the market are mined in Mexico, Brazil and in a few US states, such as Idaho and Nevada. Recently, there have been finds of opals in Africa in Ethiopia and Mali.

Opals are divided into two classes. Those displaying the play of color are known as precious opals and those lacking this are known as common opals. Gems for use in jewelry are cut from both the common and the precious opal. There are many different varieties of both common and precious opals. Among them all, none is more sought after than the so called black opal, with a characteristic play of color on a dark blue, dark green or black background. The second highest valued variant is the white, either white, yellow or cream, with a strong play of color. The so called Mexican fire opal is also sought after, an almost transparent, orange red form of the common opal. If the Mexican fire opal displays play of color, it is known as the Precious Fire Opal and of high value.

In jewelry, doublets, are thin pieces or slices of precious opals that are glued onto a matrix material. These kind of gems are considerably cheaper than solid precious opals, while still displaying the same play of color and intensity. The opal is a relatively soft gem, so a layer or coating of clear quartz is sometimes added to make it more resistant.

Fertility Stones

People have long thought that numerous stones each had their own certain special energy; some with powers to heal, others with the ability to nurture and others with the power to aid in a woman's ability to conceive. Fertility stones for ages have been thought to bring a balance of both male and female hormones along with enhancements in blood circulation, and a general overall sense of relaxation and harmony in trying to conceive, then once pregnant to care and nurture for your unborn child all through the pregnancy and through delivery.

Several of the fertility male opal bracelets usually thought of having increased levels of energy in promoting pregnancy include Bloodstone, Moonstone, Rhodonite, Rose Quartz and Unakite. Additional stones include Chryoprase, Shiva Lignum, Dolomite, Smoky Quartz, Mexican Fire Opal and Calcite. Vessonite, also called the green garnet, is thought to aid in fertility and can create the nurturing environment to stabilize pregnancy. Manifestation crystals such as quartz appears like an all natural choice when considering fertility because many of them naturally form a group of family clusters on their own.

Most of the fertility charms are thought to boost a woman's fertility. But when contemplating your fertility you should also include stones that will enhance your mates fertility. Not only should you be centered and balanced and be prepared to bring a baby into the world, but your mate should be to. Fertility jewelry they give off a masculine energy include Blue Tiger's Eye, Boji Stone and Pyrite.

The Unique and Vibrant World of Opals

If boring and milky-white is what comes to mind when you think of an opal, think again. Sure there are some stones that are more sedate and subtle in their fire, but there are also some that will set you on fire with their brilliance. Opals are a truly unique gemstone. Really! No two are alike in pattern and color. You can confidently say that no one else has an opal pendant like the one you have.

History and Legend

This gemstone got its name because of its iridescent-looking qualities. White opal bracelets is derived from the Greek word "Opallus" and the Latin word "Opalus." Respectively, these words mean to see color changes and precious stone. As with many gemstones, folklore attaches mystical-like powers to the opal. Ancient Greeks believed it gave a person the ability to see and predict the future. Others believed the opal helped ward off the ills of aging. If it does help, why not slip on an opal ring or an opal bracelet? It certainly couldn't hurt!

Origin and Chemistry

Opals primarily come from Australia. In fact, nearly 95% of the world's supply comes from the four major mines in Australia. A smattering of stones comes from Mexico, Brazil, Nevada and Idaho.

Opals are extremely soft and delicate. Their make-up is actually a silica gel, which is what forms when silica is introduced to water. Opals hold water and about 6-10% of their composition is water. Because of its flexible state, it grows wherever there is space and takes the shape of that space. Because it is so soft- a 5.5 on the Mohs scale, an opal ring is less practical, certainly for everyday wear. An opal pendant holds up better because there is less chance of knocking it and scratching it through wear.

ADVENTURE IN THE OUTBACK OF OPALTON-AS WE TAKE YOU TO OUR OPAL MINE

We would like to share with you (our wonderful customers) our most recent trip out to the remote Opal Fields! 3 hours on dirt roads from Winton and some of the whacky sights along the way….

A typical day in Central Western Queensland is strangely foreign to most and something most may never get to experience! A typical day in Central Western Queensland is strangely foreign to most and something most may never get to experience!

Be on the lookout for termite mounds in this area. Termite mounds are like climate-controlled high rise apartments for termites, and people out here can’t resist the urge to make them look the part. I felt for this guy as it was almost 100 degrees, it like he needed a cold beer.

Thunderbox Australian Outback Toilet Built in Australia for Outback conditions! Made of wood and steel, there’s not a scrap of plastic here—and with proper care, it will last a lifetime. Yet, it’s lightweight and compact, making it easy to bring along on long-term expeditions or half- day fishing trips.

Emus are one of the animals we come across with on the way. Running up to 32 miles per hour, faster than the fastest man on Earth, Usain Bolt. Although, contrary to popular myth, they are not faster than Eastern Grey Kangaroos – who can reach a top speed of 44 miles per hour.

The mighty female Emu is one bird the males know not to mess with as she dominates during breeding. Once she has laid her large green eggs, the father will take over the incubation. At this stage she may walk away and never return. Sometimes she will find another partner and breed again. Meanwhile the father is left to incubate the eggs and parents the chicks. In this time, he will not leave to drink or eat. He does not leave the nest for two months.

Bladensburg National Park is situated just 7km from Winton township and was once Bladensburg Station. It was one of the original grazing properties established in Winton in the late 19th Century. The property was officially made a National Park in 1994 and now offers the public a snapshot of station history at the Old Homestead and surrounding buildings with a Shearing Shed, as well as a beautiful collection of Winton’s landscapes with a myriad of local wildlife.

In the wet season you will often come across groups of locals having a picnic and a swim and even a game of cricket on the clay plans.

Logan Falls is a rocky gorge about 20 meters deep. There is a rough track to a waterhole at the bottom of the falls which is well used by kangaroos in the dry. You will also find kangaroo caves, Lancewood, Ghost Gums and Spinifex which is the Australian version of the tumbleweed.

On the rare occasion when it rains enough it is a sight to be seen.

WHAT IS OPAL? HOW IS OPAL FORMED?

Opal is formed from a solution of silicon dioxide and water. As water runs down through the earth, it picks up silica from sandstone, and carries this silica-rich solution into cracks and voids, caused by natural faults or decomposing fossils. As the water evaporates, it leaves behind a silica deposit. This cycle repeats over millions of years and eventually Opal is formed.

Australia has three major varieties of natural sediment Precious Opal – Black Opals from Lightning Ridge in New South Wales, White Opals from South Australia, and Queensland Boulder Opal (near our flagship store).

The many variations in the types of Opal depends on several factors. In particular, the climate’s wet and dry periods create a rising or falling water table which concentrates any silica in solution.

Check out our award winning film, "Boulder Opal Country" to discover more about Queensland Boulder Opal and the small nearby town of "Winton".

Boulder Opal A Great Choice for Pendant Jewelry

Boulder opal is a great alternative to the other two main types of opal: Black opal and White opal. Boulder opal is mostly sold in opal earrings shops as a free form piece of gemstone. That means that the stone has its own individual shape rather than an oval or a circle or a pear shape which black and white opals are normally cut into.

A free form shape will not look like any shape that you recognize but will still be pleasing. Another major difference is that boulder opal will often not be smooth and domed on the top. We call this a cabochon from an old French word which translates to the English word hat. We cut most opals into cabochons because it enhances their color characteristics by allowing the light to enter and exit the stone for maximum effect.

Boulder opal will mostly have an undulating surface of the opal material sitting on a bed or dark brown ironstone. This means that the stone will need to have a jeweler make a special setting for the stone because ready made settings or castings generally come in oval shapes which are made for cabochon cuts of stones and not free form stones.

There are two sub types of boulder opal: seam and matrix. Seam opal is found where the opal material invades cracks in the ironstone rock. When the ironstone boulder is broken apart of by running a bulldozer across it or hitting it with a big hammer the rock will split into two parts. The opal will be in each part.

Worth of an Eternity Ring

An eternity Mens opal rings are something that signifies a strong bond - may it be for friendship or an intimate relationship. It is some sort of a ritual that has been present roughly four thousand years ago. Ancient Egyptians are the forerunners of this tradition. Just as we see it, a ring is made of a piece of metal and then connected end to end to make a circle. This symbolizes a continuous and unbreakable pact. Some people embed stones and jewels to decorate it.

In the early times, rings are given to people whom you feel bound to by love or by friendship. It signifies an endless love to someone close to your heart. This is not so much different from the current situation. People still give rings to those that they hold dear.

Certain events in our lives need to be remembered with a memento. For instance, the graduation day is also the last day that you would see your friends. You eventually need to part ways and carry on with your personal lives. Exchanging eternity rings is a sign that even if they do not see each other again, their friendship would still carry on.

Another occasion where giving an eternity ring is important would be during a proposal for marriage. Engagements rings are something that women are really proud of. Usually, men are the givers of the rings, while women are the recipients. Specifically, it is because men are the ones asking for the hand of women for marriage. Opal Engagement Rings - A Taste of the Outback

Nothing could look so contemporary and probably futuristic-looking than opal engagement rings. Some folks look at genuine opal like Mother Nature's abstract art in a gemstone. Black opal engagement rings are as mysterious-looking as they are magnificent.

Unlike diamonds, opals do not need to be multi-faceted to display brilliance. Opals have an enigmatic charm and appeal that is unique and somehow look futuristic. Just like modern abstract paintings, opals depend on the eye of the beholder. For some, they look like psychedelic lights in a gemstone. What are intriguing about this gemstone are the luminous specs of color from inside the gem itself. Because of this mysterious glow within the gemstone, opal engagement rings are the perfect choice for that special modern lady with a luminous personality.

The opal ranges in color are from colorless, white, light gray through dark gray, and black. But the most unique feature of opals is the display of all the colors of the spectrum which is commonly called "play of colors" by opal enthusiasts. Because opal is made from a mix of silica and water, the light that passes through the microstructure of the gemstone gets diffracted causing the rainbow colors in the gem to seem to move and change dramatically depending on the angle from which the stone is viewed.

The Story Behind Today's Appeal of Opal Engagement Rings

Australian opal rings is known for engagement rings because it has the ability to make colors appear and disappear and also because it is known during the ancient times to have magical properties. It has been regarded by the Greeks to be prophetic. According to a legend, Roman Senator Nonius opted for an exile rather than giving his opal ring to Mark Anthony, who wanted the ring to be a gift to Cleopatra.

In the 18th century, opal has been considered to bring bad luck. This started when King Alfonso XII of Spain gave an opal ring to her wife who later died. The ring was passed to family members who also died, including the King himself. According to some, it was because of the cholera epidemic while some credit the mysterious deaths to the bad luck derived from opal.

Opal is known for its colors which are exotic and also exciting. It is said that no two opals are similar in terms of color. Although the more contemporary time has already withdrawn from the superstitious belief, there are still some who choose to stay with such superstition while majority has already regarded opal to bring fortune.

Trying to veer away from the traditional diamond rings, opal is now considered by many couples for their engagement rings. Opals are soft which requires them to have a hard setting to provide protection and to allow them to show their inner fire. Bezel setting, pronged setting, and laid setting, bezel being the most common, are the most popular settings which are made for opal engagement rings.

Black and white opals are famous for their amazing showcase of colors. It is a significant fire inside and it significant plays with colors making theme even a better choice for some as against the traditional diamond engagement ring. However, because opals are softer compared to diamonds, these stones require more caution from the wearer to avoid being chipped or scratched. Only plain water should be used for cleaning purposes.

An opal ring is the perfect engagement ring of choice if you are looking for something which is antique and magical by appearance. The fiery white opal and the Australian black opal are just some of the popular choices for opal engagement rings.

Opals - You Can Fall in Love With Them

Yesterday I met an Australian Jeweler in the lift of a specialist australian opal rings building in Sydney. He asked me what kind of jewelry work I did and I told him that I specialized in opal.

For the last fifteen years he had been making special one off hand pieces for his private customers. In all that time he had never made a piece with opals and asked me how I came to be doing that and more importantly why.

I explained to him that every single opal is different to any other and that was extremely significant. When either of us as jewelers go looking for rubies or sapphires for instance to set in a pendant or ring we spend a good deal of time looking at each stone under magnification so that we can get two or three stones that we need for the piece which are going to be exactly the same in colour and intensity. But that is definitely not the case with opal.

As all opal is unique we are looking for the opposite. We are looking for those individual qualities which set it apart from any other stone. We are looking for that blast of vibrant colour or that intricate pattern or that mass of different colours arranged in their unique form.

I explained to him that as all opal is different and that it comes in several types from different parts of Australia then you must develop a special knowledge to really understand it. Then as a cutter and polisher of these stones I have gained years and years of knowledge of opal's intricacies from such intimate work with it.

The case becomes even more peculiar when Starman and the local authorities find themselves waiting for a demand that doesn't come.

Robinson makes the story more interesting when Starman asks for Batman's help in another case regarding Solomon Grundy. Men's Fashion Rings

Mens opal rings have worn rings for more years than people presume, and not merely a simple wedding band. A combination of a wider metal spectrum, changing sensibilities and tastes, and a wider design spectrum, one can refer to men's fashion rings and not be thought daft.

Gold and silver have long been joined by titanium, tungsten steel, tungsten carbide, ceramic, palladium, and simple steel as ringmaking materials, and men's rings are not exempt. These rings are well-fitted for such stones as diamond, emerald, ruby, topaz, onyx, turquoise, opal, cubic zirconia, and more, and the colour versatility augments the design variety.

Most men's rings still come in gold or silver because of their affordability-the standard price range is between $20 and $200, depending on the stone inlay-but gold is seen as somewhat traditional while, lately, silver and steel alloys are seen as even more affordable.

According to Justmen'sRings.com, tungsten, titanium, stainless, and palladium are becoming more popular men's ring choices. Tungsten in particular is popular for its durability-the site says tungsten rings are the hardest jewelry ever hand-made and difficult to impossible to scratch or nick, not to mention that you can polish them back to their original shine readily enough. They are also amenable to two-toning between yellow and white, whether in wedding band styles or general fashion styles.

What is the Best Opal in the World?

"Potch" is what we call worthless opal earrings. It is actually opal but is has dull and lifeless grey black , white or unappealing ranges of color.

These days people tend to think that opal is found in Australia. Well it certainly is and there are two predominant types: black opal and white opal. Black opal comes from the Lightning Ridge region in the state of NSW and white opal comes from the Coober Pedy region in the state of South Australia.

Australian black opal is recognized as being the best quality gemstone opal in the world. You really need to think about that for a while. Obviously there is beautiful opal found in not just Coober Pedy but in different parts of the world.

Opal is found in all corners of the earth and has been known for many hundreds of years before it was found in Australia. Louis Leakey, an anthropologist in Kenya, found opal which had been worked by early artisans as long ago as 6,000 years.

Today there are still deposits of opal found in Hungary, Germany, Russia and other European countries as well as North and South America and Africa.

Many African states are finding deposits of opal. There is opal found in most continents and many countries but the deposits are small and the quality of opal is not good. In Australia the quantity is huge and the quality is magnificent at the top end.

I guess what experts mean is that if you are looking for the very best gemstone opal then you will most likely be talking about the black opal.

I have seen a million dollars worth of gemstone black opal held in the palm of a miner's hand. But I have also seen truckloads of worthless opal.

Why Australian Opals Are the Best in the World

Australian opals are blessed with an unusual, iridescent beauty and none more so than those found in Australia. As the primary source of this sumptuous gemstone where around 95 percent of the worlds bounty is found, the Australian outback provides the perfect harsh, dry conditions in which opals thrive. While there are many mining towns throughout the country, the four main ones are Andamooka, Coober Pedy, Lightning Ridge and White Cliffs.

Not only are the finest opals found in Australia, but the best cutters are also located here; an essential factor in calculating their quality and ultimate worth. Other ingredients which go into determining the value of the stone are the colour play, brilliance, body tone, faults and the class of opal. Single opals are considerably more expensive than doublets or triplets which are an assembled stone which are only a small part natural opal.

Body tone refers to the shade of the opal which ranges from black through to white. The darker hues are more sought after and consequently dearer because the colour play of opals shows up better against these backgrounds. Black opals are the rarest of all, making them even more precious.

This "play of colour" is what makes opals so appealing and the better this appears the more valuable the stone tends to be. It is caused by diffraction of light through the different shaped spheres of silica, of which the opal is made up. For example light passing through the larger spheres may appear red, while that passing along the smaller spheres could seem blue or green.

Opal Jewelry Information

The earliest known black opal jewelry artifacts uncovered in a cave in Kenya by famous anthropologist Louis Leakey were said to have dated back to about 4000 B.C., and were most likely originated from Ethiopia. History shows that the discovery and cultivation of the opal stone was important to the prestige and power of several ancient civilizations. As early humans continued to unearth various new and rare gemstones from the caves and crevices in which they were deposited hundreds of years before, they soon learned how to work them into decorative shapes. Once the craft of shaping opal jewelry was mastered, these mysteriously illuminating gems were rendered priceless, and revered for symbolizing great power and wealth.

What is Opal?

The modern name for the opal gem is derived from the Latin word "Opalus," meaning: "to see a color change." Scientifically, opal is an amorphous mineraloid comprised of water and a rich mix of silica composites. Opal jewelry may range anywhere in color from white or grey, to black. Black opals are the most valuable and widely known type of opal, because the rainbow of colors that the opal stone omits appears much more vibrant when standing-out against the backdrop of a darker stone. Black opals are unique and very expensive. This is because they can only be found in one location in all of the world. The place is called Lightning Ridge, and it is in Northern New South Wales. This miners' dream is home to hundreds of millions of dollars worth of precious black opal stones--stone's whose net worth value can be priced at such exponential rates as up to $15,000 per carat.

Opal Engagement Rings - Is an Opal Ring Perfect For You?

Black opal wedding rings is some of the most exotic and eye catching jewelry you can wear. Opals flash with the colors of the rainbow trapped within a silica gemstone. The most valuable black opals appear as angry storm clouds passing behind a rain washed rainbow. No two opals are the same. The color play of each is totally unique. They are beautiful, porous, fragile, highly prized and steeped in myth and legend. They make stunning engagement rings. But is an opal engagement ring right for you?

After all, opals are unlucky unless they are your birthstone, right?

Not at all! Opals are the birthstone of October and the zodiac stone of Libra, and yet they are enjoyed, admired and worn by people with birthdays throughout the year without any apparent extra bad luck befalling them! So how did this myth arise?

Like all good stories, it started a long time ago, and in Europe.

Opals have been prized throughout time for their beauty and rarity and the late 19th century Europeans were no exception! The European opal market at that time was supplied by Hungary, although some also came from further afield in India and the Middle East. But all that changed in 1890 when a new supply of significantly better opals was discovered. These were Australian opals and the like of their fiery opalescence had never been seen before! To protect their market, the Hungarians claimed the new opals were fakes.

Sir Walter Scott, like all good writers, drew on the confused panic of the day. He wrote in a novel that opals brought bad luck to people not born in October. The cursed myth was born, and the European opal market spiraled into near destruction. Near disaster was only averted when Queen Victoria herself intervened by giving gifts of opal jewelry at a Royal wedding!

Today the cursed myth may have passed into legend, but the beauty of Australian opals remains for all to see. Black opals and the best white opals have significant fire and enough play of color to hold their own even when set alongside diamonds.

Opal Jewelry - What is a Boulder Opal?

Australian Opal jewelry is some of the most sought after gemstone jewelry in the world, being fifth after diamonds, sapphires, rubies and emeralds. This is because opals are some of the most beautiful gemstones available. And whilst most people have probably heard of black, white and fire opals, boulder opals are probably less well known. So why are they becoming so popular?

The body colors of these gemstones are derived from the host rock in which they formed and are categorised as black, gray, white, fire, crystal or jelly. Despite this, opals actually exhibit a wide variety of colors, including pink, fiery orange, tropical blue and others. However, they are most prized for their internal play of color and fiery opalescence. In a good gemstone, the effect is like the rainbow display on the surface of a soap bubble.

Opals have a unique physical structure. They are comprised of silicon dioxide, which is also the major component of sand. However, in opal, the silicon dioxide forms minute spheres which aggregate into a pyramid shaped grid. And tiny droplets of water become trapped within this grid as the opal forms. The pay of color seen within an opal comes from fractures and faults within this pyramid structure. And whilst this is the same for all opals, not all opals are the same.

So what exactly is a boulder opal?

Like 95% of opals used in jewelry worldwide, boulder opals are found in Australia. However, rather than being mined in the conventional way, these specific opals are found thinly spread over a extensive region of Australian Ironstone, also known as boulder country. In the natural state, the gemstone forms to fill in the cracks and crevices of the Ironstone boulders.

Unlike black, fire, white and grey opals which are readily cut from their host rock, opals in ironstone boulders are so closely associated with it, and sometimes for such thin tracks as they fill in the crack in the rocks that they cannot easily be cut from their host rock. This was initially a stumbling block which prevented these gorgeous gems from taking their rightful place in opal jewelry.

However, these days, the gemstone is always cut from the boulder in such as way as to include some of the brown host Ironstone rock, which makes for very beautiful and highly unusual pieces, perfect for fine jewelry! Today these opals are extremely popular and jewelry containing it is in high demand. Because the opal veins often form in a freeform way, the resultant boulder opals are often in an irregular baroque shape, perfect for earrings or pendants.

Where does Opal come from?

Since the late 19th Century, Australia has been the number one country in opal export and production, contributing more than ninety percent of the global output. Opal of differing qualities occurs in over twenty other countries, and is particularly indigenous to Zambia, Ethiopia, Peru, Indonesia, New South Wales, New Zealand, Brazil, and Mexico.

What makes Opal Jewelry so Special?

Opal, whose colors changed with every shift of light, was rarer than pearls and diamonds, and destined to be the most common gem to be associated with the reflection of one's innermost desires and dreams. Early races believed that the opal stone possessed mystical energies that would enable its wearer to see the future. Opal jewelry is said to carry within it an innate sense of magic, and obtain the powers of prophetic insight and understanding for its wearer. Opal's beautifully reflecting and ever-changing spectral hues were believed to be a powerful and potent charm which allowed one to let go of their inhibitions and encouraged spontaneity. Opal jewelry is also rumored to aid in obtaining clarity. The opal, which looks different at every angle from which the stone is viewed, is said to have the power to amplify and mirror internal feelings, buried emotions, and desires. According to ancient Arabian folklore, the opal stone descended from heaven in powerful flashes of lightning. To the Romans, opal was considered to be a token of hope and one of purity.

Colors of Opal Jewelry

The truly unique thing about opal is that it displays all the colors of the color spectrum in a so-called "play of color," that results from the diffraction of light when passing through the tiny silica spheres that exist deep within the infrastructure of the opal. This means that the rainbow colors on the surface of the stone will move and change dramatically when you shift and rotate the stone in the palm of your hand. The value of each individual opal varies greatly in accordance with several different factors which determine its worth: such as body tone (or backdrop color), play of color, colors present, brilliance, pattern, shape, size, and cut of stone. Generally, black opal jewelry is the most highly coveted form of opal. The lighter gray and whiter body tones are more abundant in nature, and slightly less thrilling to the naked eye.

The Opal and Magic

In the middle ages, the opal was known as the "eye stone," because it was believed to have a magical power which would help its wearer have sharper eyesight. Blonde women were known to collect as many pieces of opal jewelry as they could muster, because the opal was believed to contain within it the power to magically keep blonde hair from losing its luster and bright golden color.

Some cultures thought that the elaborate and illuminating colors of the opal, when reflected directly into a persons eyes, would render them invisible to that person. Thus, it was believed that an opal charm, when used properly, could give its owner mystical disappearing powers.

The Opal and Desire

Legend has it that one ancient Roman emperor offered to trade an entire third of his vast empire for a single opal. Cleopatra's famous lover Mark Antony loved opal. Legend says that he so deeply coveted an opal owned by Roman Senator Nonius for his beloved Cleopatra, that he had the Senator banished after he refused to sell his precious almond-sized stone, which was valued at over $80,000.

Some Legendary Opals

The "Aurora Australis"

Found in 1938 at Lightning Ridge, the "Aurora Australis" is the world's most valuable black opal. With its dominant red, green, and deep blue hues, this 3' by 1.8' inch 180 carat stone is more than just a pleasure to look at. Dug out from an old seabed encrusted deep within the ocean core, this rare beauty sports a distinct impression of a starfish fossil on its underside. Just last year, this prize opal gem was valued at $1,000,000. It is named after the northern lights.

The "Fire Queen"

Discovered in 1906 by a man named Chalie Dunstan, the 900 carat "Fire Queen" is the largest opal to date. This fiery red-hued giant opal was given to the Chicago Museum in 1928, and then in the 1940's, was sold to the highly acclaimed heir to an oil fortune, J.D. Rockefeller wished for it to be a part of his prestigious family collection. As for Charlie Dunstan, rumor has it that right after he sold the "Fire Queen," he got drunk and 'lost' two of its big-sized sister stones. In 1910, shortly after the stones had been lost, Dunstan was found dead. It was said that he committed suicide after the loss of his precious stones.

How to Find the Best Deals on Unique Opal Rings Online

Red opal rings of course is the most valuable but often times opals of other colors can have features that render them unique in their own right. If you know your opals then you surly know that synthetic opals are now being manufactured and marketed. They are commonly referred to as "imitation" or "synthetic" and the fact is that they can look fantastic.

The problem is that you can bet your last dollar that synthetic opals are being marketed as real opals by someone online right now and this is a person that you don't want to do business with. Since determining what it is that makes a unique opal ring unique in the first place can have so many variables it is suggested that you do a lot of looking around online before you do any buying.

Beware of any deals that sound too good to be true and if you find a someone that seems stupid and doesn't know what they are doing watch out. This is because, after the deal is done, it often times will turn out that you were the one that was stupid and didn't know what they were doing.

One idea is to visit jewelry related chat rooms and talk to like minded shoppers that may be able to point you in the right direction. Also, bear in mind that your first priority should be to find reputable people to buy from. Running around looking franticly for a good "steal" will most often lead to the type of steal that you don't want.

How to Choose the Perfect Opal Rings

Black Opal Rings are one of the most flamboyant forms of opal jewelry. They have been prized down the ages for their breathtaking opalescence and dramatic range of color flashes. They have been considered lucky charms capable of bestowing many powers on the wearer including beauty, success and happiness as well as the powers of prophecy and foresight. And they symbolize hope and purity too. But it is their beauty, which makes opal rings perfect gifts.

When looking for the best opal ring you first need to focus on finding the ideal gemstone for the centerpiece. This can be quite difficult because there are a wide range of gemstone types but whether you choose a black, white, boulder, fire, jelly or any other opal, the most important thing to look for is the brilliance of the internal fire.

Like diamonds, opals are graded four ways according to their pattern, colors, shape and clarity. Apart from clarity, which must be good, these gradings are essentially descriptive classifications which can be interpreted subjectively. After all everyone will pick a different shape stone with different colors and patterns of opalescence for their favorite! But the best opals all have strong and striking plays of color. Gemstones with poor clarity and weak color plays do not make attractive rings.

Some opals exhibit a wide range of colors including blues, greens, purples and flashes of orange red and pink. And although many people believe that the best gemstones have the widest range of color play, this is again very subjective. It is the strength and vibrancy of the colors that makes a good opal. This means that you might prefer a gemstone with a bold blue and green color play to one which has a lot of colors but no life to it.

And if you are choosing an opal ring for someone else, say for an engagement ring, try to choose a gemstone which incorporates their favourite colors in its color play.

The best opal rings have high domed cabochon gemstones at their centers to maximise the color and make the most of its clarity. Superb clarity is important because any included sand particles can ruin the opalescence of the gemstone and with it, the appearance of the ring.

Once you have found your perfect opal, make sure it is set beautifully into a quality precious metal setting. The ring will look best if you choose a metal color matching the gemstone base color. Black opal rings always look best when made from white gold, silver or platinum but white and boulder opals can look wonderful in white or yellow metal depending upon the color plays within the gemstone itself.

Fire Opal - A Cool Stone With Lots of Heat

All fire opal jewelry are made of silicon dioxide and water. The amount of water varies and determines the fragility of the individual stone. This gemstone is formed when silicon dioxide becomes wet and turns to a gel. This gel substance then works its way into the open spaces between rocks and caves. As it sets, an opal is formed.

Typically, the gemstone retains about 10% water content which makes it quite soft and delicate. They also come in a variety of colors-shades of blue, green, pink, black, white, red, yellow and orange. This stone is coveted for its play of color which is the dazzling display of color as light bounces off the spheres of silica.

The fire opal is one gemstone that is less desired for its play of color as it is for its actual color. As the name implies, this stone is afire with reds, yellows and oranges. Finding a fire opal pendant with hot shades as well as play of color offers the best of both worlds.

Where do they come from?

This fiery stone typically comes from Mexico. In fact, it is the country's official gemstone. Ancient Mayans and Aztecs used the fire opal in their mosaic creations and also in special ceremonies. While most of the gemstones on the market likely came from Mexico, there are other mines located in the United States, South America and Australia among others. Most recently, significant deposits were found in Brazil and the stones were of considerable size.
