Opal Meaning: The Beauty and Symbolism Behind the Gemstone

Opal is one of the most mesmerizing and unique gemstones, known for its stunning play of color and intricate patterns. This precious stone has captivated people for centuries, not just for its beauty, but also for the deep symbolism and meaning associated with it. In this piece, we explore the various meanings of opal, its metaphysical properties, and why it holds such a special place in the world of gemstones.

The Unique Beauty of Opal

Opal rings are unlike most gemstones because of their distinctive visual appearance. Unlike a diamond or sapphire, opals don’t reflect light in a uniform way. Instead, they contain microscopic silica spheres that reflect light in various directions, creating an iridescent play of colors. This phenomenon, known as play-of-color, results in flashes of vibrant hues such as blue, green, yellow, red, and purple, making each opal stone one of a kind.

Opals come in different types, with the most popular being precious opal and common opal. Precious opals exhibit the mesmerizing play-of-color, while common opals are typically opaque and lack this iridescence. The black opal, known for its rich body color and vibrant flashes, is one of the rarest and most valuable varieties. White opals, on the other hand, offer a lighter appearance with softer hues, making them highly sought after for jewelry.

Opal Symbolism: A Stone of Transformation

Opals have been cherished by cultures throughout history, and they carry rich symbolism in various traditions. Ancient Romans believed that opals were symbols of hope, purity, and good fortune. They considered the stone a good omen, especially for those seeking love and luck. The vibrant colors of opals were thought to represent the entire color spectrum, making them symbols of balance and harmony.

In other cultures, opals were believed to have magical properties. The ancient Greeks associated the gemstone with the goddess of love, Aphrodite, linking it to love and beauty. In the Middle Ages, opals were believed to possess protective qualities, helping to guard against illness and misfortune.

Opals are also connected to transformation and emotional healing. This gemstone is thought to amplify the energies of the wearer’s emotions, helping to bring unresolved feelings to the surface. As such, opals are often considered stones of self-discovery and spiritual growth. They encourage creativity and emotional expression, making them a powerful tool for those looking to unlock their full potential and connect with their inner selves.

Metaphysical Properties of Opal

Beyond its symbolism, opal is widely believed to have metaphysical properties that can enhance personal well-being. It is often thought to stimulate the third eye and crown chakras, allowing the wearer to access deeper intuition and spiritual insight. This connection to higher consciousness is said to promote a sense of calm, serenity, and emotional balance.

Opal is also known as a stone of transformation. It is believed to help individuals through times of personal growth and change by encouraging flexibility and adaptability. Whether you’re going through a transition in your life or need assistance in breaking old habits, opal’s energy is said to assist in embracing new beginnings and letting go of the past.

For those seeking inspiration and creativity, opals are often recommended for artists, writers, and musicians. The stone’s vibrant play of color is thought to ignite the imagination and spark new ideas. It is also said to help in enhancing communication skills, making it beneficial for public speakers or those who need to express themselves more effectively.

Opal in Modern Culture

In modern times, opals continue to captivate the world of fine jewelry, with their enchanting play of colors making them a popular choice for unique and luxurious designs. Opal engagement rings, for example, have become a distinctive choice for couples seeking something out of the ordinary. This gemstone’s connection to love and beauty, combined with its stunning visual appeal, makes it a perfect symbol for a lifelong commitment.

Opals also have a place in alternative healing practices. Many people use opal stones in meditation and spiritual practices, believing that the stone can help foster a deeper connection to the divine and enhance emotional healing.

Conclusion

Opals are not just beautiful gemstones—they are deeply symbolic and full of meaning. Whether you’re drawn to the opal’s mesmerizing colors, its association with love and transformation, or its metaphysical properties, this gemstone has something special to offer. Whether worn as a piece of jewelry or used for spiritual growth, opal holds a place of significance in both the world of gemstones and the hearts of those who appreciate its beauty and energy.

Opal Jewelry: A Timeless Symbol of Elegance and Beauty

Opal jewelry has captivated admirers for centuries with its mesmerizing play-of-color and ethereal charm. Unlike any other gemstone, opals display a shifting spectrum of colors, making each piece truly one-of-a-kind. Whether you're drawn to the mysterious depths of black opals or the soft pastel hues of white opals, this gemstone’s enchanting beauty has made it a favorite for engagement rings, earrings, necklaces, and bracelets.

What Makes Opal Jewelry Special?

Opals are unique due to their ability to diffract light, creating a stunning display of colors known as "opalescence." This phenomenon makes opal jewelry incredibly dynamic, as the gemstone can shift hues depending on the lighting and angle. No two opals are ever the same, giving each piece of jewelry a distinct personality and charm.

There are several types of opals used in jewelry, including:

  • White Opal – The most common variety, featuring a milky white or translucent background with vibrant flashes of color.
  • Black Opal – One of the rarest and most valuable, with a dark body tone that enhances its vibrant color play.
  • Boulder Opal – Found in Australia, boulder opals have a natural ironstone backing that intensifies their colorful display.
  • Fire Opal – Typically found in Mexico, fire opals have a deep orange or red hue with a fiery glow, often without the traditional play-of-color.

Why Choose Opal Jewelry?

  1. Unique Aesthetic Appeal – Opals' ever-changing colors make them stand out among traditional gemstones.
  2. Versatile Styles – Whether set in gold or silver, opals complement both vintage and modern jewelry designs.
  3. Symbolic Meaning – Opals are believed to bring creativity, inspiration, and emotional healing to the wearer.
  4. Perfect for Special Occasions – From engagement rings to anniversary gifts, opal jewelry adds a touch of elegance to any celebration.

Caring for Your Opal Jewelry

Opals are relatively delicate compared to harder gemstones like diamonds or sapphires. To maintain their brilliance:

  • Avoid exposing them to extreme temperatures or direct sunlight for prolonged periods.
  • Store opal jewelry separately to prevent scratching from harder stones.
  • Use a soft, damp cloth to clean opals—avoid harsh chemicals or ultrasonic cleaners.

Opal Jewelry Trends in 2025

Opal jewelry continues to be a sought-after choice in the fashion world. Some trending styles include:

  • Vintage Opal Rings – Inspired by Victorian and Art Deco designs, these rings offer a timeless and romantic appeal.
  • Minimalist Opal Pendants – Simple yet elegant, these pendants highlight the gemstone’s natural beauty.
  • Boulder Opal Statement Pieces – Unique, raw opals set in handcrafted designs are gaining popularity for their bold aesthetic.
  • Australian Opal Engagement Rings – Many couples are choosing opals over traditional diamonds for their distinctive look and symbolism.

Whether you're looking for an heirloom-quality piece or a modern, trendy design, opal jewelry is a stunning choice that never goes out of style. Its magical colors and deep symbolism make it an exquisite addition to any jewelry collection.

Is real opal expensive?

The cost of real opals can vary widely depending on factors such as quality, color, size, and origin. Opals are gemstones known for their iridescence and play of colors, and their value is influenced by the intensity and variety of colors they exhibit. Here are some factors that can affect the price of real opals:

Color: Opals with vibrant and intense colors, especially reds and blues, are generally more valuable than those with dull or subdued colors.

Pattern: The play-of-color patterns in opals, such as harlequin, pinfire, and floral, can impact their value. Rare and distinctive patterns often command higher prices.

Size: Larger opals are typically more valuable than smaller ones. However, large, high-quality opals with intense colors can be exceptionally rare and expensive.

Origin: Opals from certain locations may be more highly regarded and therefore more expensive. For example, Australian opals, especially those from Lightning Ridge, are highly prized for their quality.

Transparency: Opal earrings  that are more transparent and free of impurities are generally more valuable.

Shape: Well-cut and symmetrical opals may be more valuable than irregularly shaped stones.

Treatment: Some opals undergo treatments to enhance their colors or stability. Untreated, natural opals are often considered more valuable.

Given these factors, prices for real opals can range from relatively affordable to extremely expensive. It's essential to purchase opals from reputable dealers who provide information about the opal's characteristics and origin. Additionally, getting a certification from a gemological laboratory can help verify the authenticity and quality of the opal.

To Care For Your mineral jewellery

These thusmewhat fragile however so beautiful gems ar distinctive among the gemstones. I even have taken rough material, cut and polished several opals. I cannot count the amount of mineral stones I even have set into jewellery. I do love opals nickname.

Opal recommendation. Here ar the most things to consider once carrying and storing mineral jewellery. 1st of all, mineral isn't as sturdy as another stones however definitely is as sturdy as most emeralds you see. mineral isn't as onerous as emeralds however most emeralds can chip simply associate thanks to internal flaws might even be broken by cleaning! mineral is pretty safe once cleansed properly associated isn't attending to chip or break unless it's offer an nasty knock. you are doing have to be compelled to use caution to not let the stone run against onerous things or knock it around. Then again, United Nations agency desires to knock around any australian opal!

Opal may be a "glass-like" material, terribly kind of like glass with some specific exceptions: The glass-like structure explains the flexibility of black opal direct to chip or scratch. think about mineral as glass and you may take excellent care of it mechanically. Then again, though product of constant oxide material as glass, mineral is quiet completely different which distinction is what makes this jewel thus tremendous. Imagine taking a bunch of glass marbles and place those into a bowl. Fill the bowl with water merely enough to hide the marbles.

This is an easy visual example of however mineral is made within the gem. Over time, little spheres (balls) of oxide along|close|move} and layer together till a whole stone is created. Between the microscopic beads of oxide is a few water. Of course, the beads or balls of oxide in a veryn mineral ar way more tightly along than within the "marbles in a bowl" example and therefore the water is far less. Opals might contain up to concerning 100% water.

The color associated fireplace of an mineral comes from the teams of the oxide balls. The terribly size of the balls determines what light-weight is mirrored back to the attention. Some teams ar shut enough to replicate red light-weight whereas others spaced a small amount otherwise can replicate blue or inexperienced light-weight. The balls slice the sunshine and replicate an exact color looking on the dimensions of the oxide balls and therefore the spacing of the balls within the stone. This is wherever the colour comes from.

Opal Engagement Rings - Is An Opal Ring Right For You?

Australian Opal flash rainbow colors trapped in a quartz gemstone. The most precious black opals appear like angry storm clouds passing behind a rain-washed rainbow. No two opals are the same. The color play of each of them is completely unique. They are beautiful, porous, fragile, highly valued and shrouded in myth and legend. They make amazing engagement rings.

After all, opals are out of luck if they're not your stone, right?

Not at all! Opals are the keystone of October and the zodiac stone of Libra, yet they are enjoyed, admired and worn by birthday people all year round without any apparent extra bad luck! So how did this myth come about?

Like all good stories, it started a long time ago and in Europe.

Opals have been prized for their beauty and rarity throughout time, and late 19th century Europeans were no exception! The European opal market at the time was supplied by Hungary, although some also came from further afield in India and the Middle East. But everything changed in 1890, when a new supply of significantly better opals was discovered. They were Australian opals and their fiery opalescence had never been seen before! To protect their market, the Hungarians claimed that the new opals were fakes.

In the novel, he wrote that opals brought bad luck to people not born in October. A cursed myth was born and the European opal market almost collapsed. A near disaster was averted when Queen Victoria herself intervened by donating opal jewelry at the royal wedding!

Today, the cursed myth may have become legend, but the beauty of Australian opals is there for all to see. Black opals and the best white opals have a distinctive fire and enough play of color to hold their own even when placed next to diamonds.

However, opals are much softer than diamonds, so they should be set to protect the gem from chips and scratches. Frame settings are popular for this reason. They should be cleaned gently in plain water and certainly not in harsh chemical cleaners suitable for diamonds!

Opal Briliant  makes sensational jewelry. And if you are looking for an incredibly beautiful and completely unique engagement ring with a mythical antique feel, an opal ring could be perfect for you.

Benefits of Opal Gemstone

Above all, Opal gemstone is considered one of the replacement stones of diamond. Another alternative to diamond is zircon. Opal diamond ring is cool in nature and well known for its calming properties. This stone corresponds to Libra and serves as the zodiac sign of this stone. Libra helps bring hope and a positive outlook on life. The name of the stone is derived from three sources, including Opalus (Latin), Opalliois (Greek) and Upala, a word derived from Sanskrit. All the above words convey the same meaning which is 'rare'. The main characteristic of the stone is the strong display of light when passing through fluorescent light. This phenomenon is recognized as opalescence.

The Australian opal is also mentioned in old English literature. In fact, the famous English poet Shakespeare gave this stone the title 'Queen of Gems'. Another, well-known historian Pliny also mentioned this gem in one of his writings.

Opal gemstone is worn for various purposes. Wearing this gemstone adds a special charm to your personality. This gem will make your presence more pleasant in front of the opposite sex. In fact, from an astrological point of view, this stone is considered to be the final solution to matters related to love and marriage. This gem is sure to bring you all worldly comfort and luxury.

Fire opal is a variant of the opal stone. During ancient times, this stone was considered the ultimate embodiment of love and friendship. Fire opals are usually found in shades of yellow, red or orange. Mexico and Brazil are two hotspots where this stone can be discovered. It reflects fidelity, certainty and religious devotion. This makes it considered as the rarest stone apart from being rare and expensive. The gemstone also has numerous therapeutic benefits. For example, it helps speed up the metabolism and energizes the sexual chakra. In addition, it helps in the treatment of eye-related diseases. The gemstone is known exclusively for its amazing healing properties.

A Master's Piece: Stunning Opal Inlay Ring

An extremely impressive opal inlay ring can be skillfully made by a jewelry artist. Generally, an artist's favorites are black opal and crystal opal. He can also opt for tanzanite, diamonds or other precious stones to be inlaid in his chosen metal setting. Of course, his designs will vary depending on what's stylish or if clients will request custom made designs.

Some makers offer after-sale services like opal inlay repairs and re-polishing. Collectors and consumers should be excited because most makers adapt their workmanship and services to tailor fit our need for quality and creativity in our jewelry.

If you are really lucky, you can find a really terrific jewelry maker that can fashion a design that will look so much more its real worth. There are designs that only he can create. Try as you might, chances are you will see a similar design but at a much higher and dearer price.

I am so happy to own this band ring for many years now. This ring attracts so much admiration with an inlaid Peruvian blue opal, accented by shiny diamonds; the overall design is that the ring is in a twisted pattern. I find the setting very unusual and exceedingly gorgeous. I just can take my eyes off my finger sometimes. By the way, I found it best (well, I read somewhere) to wear this on the right hand. It's more meaningful that way as what experts say.

But one thing that my jeweler reminded me, even nagged me, was I have to remember that an opal is a fragile gem. So, I have to take care of it: no dropping it accidentally, no wearing it when I'm doing my gardening, not even getting it in frequent contact with my make up. Of course, cleaning it with harsh chemicals or storing it with harder stones is a big no.

Purchasing this ring took all of my salary, so I'm definitely following his advice. I was especially convinced with following his tips when I recently noticed that the Peruvian blue inlaid opal became as deep blue as the sea when I wore a blue dress to my company's Christmas party.

Likewise, this made me think that if I continue to treat it well, handle it with care, I will be able to save this for my children to appreciate. If opal rings are currently popular as engagement rings, certainly it fits as an heirloom piece as well.

Australian Opal Ring - Learn to Choose Quality Pearl

Australian Opal has some of the most popular and respected attractions. These beautiful opals are found in the Australian Outback region with a strong and extremely poor climate. These conditions have guarded Australia's top opal and have made them even more beautiful as if they were created and made with unimaginable power. Australia is the first source of opals and other opal jewelry due to their abundance in the Australian Outback.

There are actually opals that are commonly found in arid areas. However, these opals are fire-resistant and the precious beauty of Australian opal rings is why they are sold at a very low price or made in double and triplets. Precious opals are found in arid areas where water is scarce or scarce.

Many people are interested in opal jewelry. Australian opal rings are really popular with consumers today as they cater to both men and women. Popular gemstones are preferred by men when it comes to Australian opal rings black opals. These opals are set in gold or silver rings and are very masculine and impressive to look at. The contrast between the metal and the black opal makes the opal stand out and emits a certain fire that makes the wearer more powerful but more peaceful when looking.

On the other hand, the popular choice for women when it comes to Australian opal rings is opals set with a small metal and embellished with diamonds. This type of ring makes the opal stand out in comparison to the shiny white frame and makes it look shiny. Most women consider these types of Australian opal bracelets because of their intricate beauty.

There are also opal rings for sale at a lower price compared to precious opals. These opal rings are double or triple. The doublets use small pieces of precious opal. These small pieces of opal are combined with ironstone which makes it look like a solid piece of black opal. Doublets are sold at a much lower price than precious opals as few opals are used. Should You Consider Opal Engagement Rings?

More and more opal engagement ring couples are now looking for the less obvious choice when it comes to engagement rings. These are the modern couples who are not at all that impressed by diamond rings and are looking for something that will stand out as well as represent them better. If you are one of these couples looking for the one ring, I'd suggest looking into opal engagement rings. As the name says, these engagement rings are using opal gemstone as the center and they are just stunning.

When it comes to these opal  rings the first thing you will notice is the color. Or to be more precise, the colors. As you might know opal is the only gemstone in the world that can produce every single color from the spectrum from a single stone. this has of course lead to a lot of mystifying of the opal gemstone in the past where the scientist and people were not certain how this amazing play of colors is able to take place in the gemstone. As it turned out, the opals are made of microscopic spheres of silica arranged in an orderly network. Because of this light that passes thought the stone can be diffracted into very various colors of the spectrum.

However no matter what sort of opals you chose for your opal engagement rings you need to know the gemstones only flaw. There is a hardness scale used to measure the hardness factor and on it opals are ranking a low-ish 5.5 to 6 at best. For your comparison be aware that diamonds have a 10 ranking on the scale. This means that you should be more careful as opals are more prone to chipping and cracking but if you are willing to look past that one flaw and be careful with your ring you are guaranteed to make an amazing choice as these gemstones are prefect.

The most amazing thing about all opal engagement rings is the play of color. This takes place because the light brakes in the little microscopic spheres of silica arranged in an orderly network and as the result it produces a very different spectrum of colors of the gemstone. But having that said there is no single type of opal but several different ones you can buy and get for your engagement ring. The more popular ones being Dark or Black Opal, White or Light Opal, Milk or Crystal Opal, Boulder Opal, Opal Matrix, Yowah Nuts from Queensland - the so-called "picture stones", and also Mexican and Fire Opal.

That all said, there is only one drawback of going with opal engagement rings. The fact that these rings might not be as resistant and as durable as the more traditional option. You see on the MOHS or the harness scale use to measure these gemstones, the opals are only ranking between 5.5 to 6 depending on the stone and the type. Compared to the diamonds that are rocking a solid 10 you can understand how opals will chip more and be less resistant to the daily ware and tare. However if you are willing to work with this you are going to have an amazing and very unique engagement ring!

How to Choose the Perfect Opal Rings

Opal rings are one of the most flamboyant forms of opal jewelry. They have been prized down the ages for their breathtaking opalescence and dramatic range of color flashes. They have been considered lucky charms capable of bestowing many powers on the wearer including beauty, success and happiness as well as the powers of prophecy and foresight. And they symbolize hope and purity too. But it is their beauty, which makes opal rings perfect gifts.

When looking for the best opal ring you first need to focus on finding the ideal gemstone for the centerpiece. This can be quite difficult because there are a wide range of gemstone types but whether you choose a black, white, boulder, fire, jelly or any other opal, the most important thing to look for is the brilliance of the internal fire.

Like diamonds, opals are graded four ways according to their pattern, colors, shape and clarity. Apart from clarity, which must be good, these gradings are essentially descriptive classifications which can be interpreted subjectively. After all everyone will pick a different shape stone with different colors and patterns of opalescence for their favorite! But the best opals all have strong and striking plays of color. Gemstones with poor clarity and weak color plays do not make attractive rings.

Some opals exhibit a wide range of colors including blues, greens, purples and flashes of orange red and pink. And although many people believe that the best gemstones have the widest range of color play, this is again very subjective. It is the strength and vibrancy of the colors that makes a good opal. This means that you might prefer a gemstone with a bold blue and green color play to one which has a lot of colors but no life to it.

And if you are choosing an opal ring for someone else, say for an engagement ring, try to choose a gemstone which incorporates their favourite colors in its color play.

The best opal rings have high domed cabochon gemstones at their centers to maximise the color and make the most of its clarity. Superb clarity is important because any included sand particles can ruin the opalescence of the gemstone and with it, the appearance of the ring.

Once you have found your perfect opal, make sure it is set beautifully into a quality precious metal setting. The ring will look best if you choose a metal color matching the gemstone base color. Black opal rings always look best when made from white gold, silver or platinum but white and boulder opals can look wonderful in white or yellow metal depending upon the color plays within the gemstone itself.

Finding the perfect opal for your ring can take a lot of effort. However, the end result is worth it!

For instance, the black opal can cost as much as a diamond and is the rarest of the bunch. Generally, opals have a wide price range and a lot has to do with the color and clarity of the gemstone, as well as the integrity. For instance, red opals are usually more expensive than the more abundant blue opals. Doublet or triplet opal jewelry, classified as a piece of opal that is sandwiched between two other materials is usually less expensive than the solid opal pieces. Whether you decide on a rare black opal jewelry piece or a less expensive variety, one that is set in gold or silver, or embellished with other gemstones, rest assured that all opal gemstones are unique and beautiful treasures displaying multitudes of color.

Opal Is Cheap But It Is As High As A Engagement Ring

Due to its unique beauty and splendor, Opal is known as the "Queen of Gems". It is worthy of fame for that reason as no other gemstone has ever been as beautiful as its beauty. Opal can make many different ornaments, perhaps because they bring out the different colors of the rainbow in a fun way. And one of these ornaments that can be an excellent opal engagement ring, due to its high quality and high line technology. The opal engagement ring is becoming more common.

In fact, opal can be used very well instead of a diamond ring. As diamonds are more expensive than opals, but depending on the availability of the market opals are rare. Opals are very rare compared to diamonds, which are actually very common.

However, do not rush into getting an opal engagement ring; you should first know that it is soft compared to a diamond. In fact, opals are as strong as diamonds. And on a scale of 10 and 10 being very high, a diamond has a rating of 10 and an opal can have 5 as its average weight. Therefore, in this case it is very important that you first understand the hardness of the gemstone before buying.

Especially if you are going to use a stone in a wedding ring as this will have a direct impact on it. The wearer will need extra care to prevent injury or breakage. One big reason that the opal engagement ring will break, is nothing but misery.

Of the many different types of opal, rock opal, to date, can be a solid and durable type compared to other existing species. It can make a good money opal ring as this can be a solid type of opal. Additionally, you should also consider the type of opal engagement ring settings you will use for the stone. And with opal, the best setting you can use would be a bezel setting or a rub-over. This type of setting will actually protect the opal from damage as opposed to the type of claw setting that actually exposes the opal to breakage. The best setting is the one you like.

This tip is very simple; you can use it immediately and start seeing the results you want! But that is not all.

You can take this step further and increase your understanding using another simple method. The problem is, I have no space here to share it. However, on my website.

Caring for Your Opal Jewelry

These delicate but delicate gemstones differ from gemstones. I took rough materials, cut and polished many opals. I can't count the number of opal stones I have for jewelry. I like opals.

Opal advice. Here are the main things to consider when wearing and maintaining opal jewelry. First of all, opal is not as strong as other gemstones but it is certainly as strong as the other emeralds you see. Opal is not as strong as emeralds but many emeralds will break easily due to internal defects that can be damaged by cleaning! Opal is very safe when properly cleaned and will not crack or break unless it is badly beaten. You have to be careful not to let the stone run into hard objects or hit them. Then again, who wants to knock on any jewelry!

Opal rings are a "glass-like" object, very similar to glass with a few exceptions: The glass-like structure defines the opal's ability to filter or scratch. Think of opal as glass and you will take good care of it automatically. Then again, although it is made of glass-like silica material, opal is still unique and that difference is what makes this gemstone so remarkable. Imagine you are taking a piece of marble from a glass jar and putting it in a bowl. Fill the bowl with enough water to cover the marbles.

This is a simple visual example of how opal is built inside a gemstone. Over time, tiny silica particles (balls) come together and spread out until a whole stone is formed. Among the small silica beads there is some water. Of course, beads or silica balls in opal are more compact than the example of "marble in a bowl" and water is much less. Opal may contain about 10% water.

The color and fire of opal come from silica ball groups. The size of the balls determines what light is coming from the back of the eye. Some groups are close enough to reflect red light while others placed slightly apart will reflect blue or green light. The balls separate the light and show a certain color depending on the size of the silica balls and the separation of the balls on the gemstone. This is where the color comes from.

Water in an opal bracelet is stable, in stable opal! Some opals are "water-based" when dug for a few weeks in dry air and the stone will crack due to dryness! Gem quality opals do not do this. Opal selected stone cutters have water content contained in the stone and are proven to be stable and safe. These opals should not change from "water loss" during the lifetime of jewelry. Dipping opal in water or oil is unnecessary and comes from old rumors.

General Care. Here is all the care information. First, think of opal as glass, even the thought is not glass but the same. Remembering this will prevent damage. Cleaning is easily done with mild dish detergent at room temperature. Use a very soft brush or your fingers to remove body fat and dirt from the jewelry. Wash and dry. This is a great time to test and make sure the stone is safe and strong in the condition. Tap the ring near your ear to hear a small "whisper" that indicates a loose stone.

Heat and cold can damage the opal. In general, when rapid and extreme temperature changes occur, opal may be damaged. This is like burning a stone quickly with a flame..zap, like many other stones it will break. Daily changes in temperature will be safe. Beware of extreme conditions such as from sauna to frozen pool! That kind of temperature change can damage a stone. Everyday wear is safe.

I did not jump into the hot shower when I came out of the cold wearing opal. Just open the ring and keep it out of the bathtub from the start. This saves the stone cleaner by avoiding too much cleaning of "soap trash" and sudden temperature changes that can be dangerous.

Avoid abrasives. Abrasives such as sandpaper. The objects that will scratch the glass will scratch the opal. Remove the ring when washing dishes, working in the yard and filling sandboxes or applying makeup. Yes, makeup is harmful. Most of the black smudges people get by wearing necklaces are from cosmetics. The finest particles in a building look like a thin sheet of sandpaper, which scratches the gold so thoroughly that the gold looks black. That is the reason for the abundance of polishing, gold-plated effect of finea "sandpaper" for make up.

Opal can be scratched by making makeup. The scratches will be beautiful and you will not notice them but they will eventually shed light on the stone. Please wear any opals and any jewelry after any makeup, hair spray or other items used by women has been completed. Store jewelry where it will not slip or rub other jewelry. That is almost as safe as you can get it.

Opal is October's Birthstone

If you're still young enough to remember your birthday, you probably also remember the special birthstone assigned to it. But at your age, we bet you don't really know the SIGNIFICANCE of your birthstone and what power the ancients felt would be bestowed about you by wearing it.

October Birthstone: Opal

Birthstone Properties: Enhances insight and dispels fear

Alternative Birthstone: Tourmaline

Opal ring is the birthstone for October and the gemstone given to commemorate a 14th wedding anniversary. The word "opal" for this dynamic gemstone was derived from the Greek word "opallus" which means to see a change in color...because it is, after all, opal's ability to refract and reflect specific wavelengths of light that make it so special. In fact, there are more than a dozen varieties of fiery and iridescent opals.

Opal is a non-crystallized silica, a mineral found near the earth's surface in areas where ancient geothermal hot springs once existed. Romans called the magnificent gemstone "Cupid Paederos," meaning a child as beautiful as love. They believed that opals fell to earth from the heavens in a flash of lightening.

However they arrived in on Earth originally, today opals must be mined from deposits found primarily in Southern Australia, although other sources exist in Brazil, Mexico, Czechoslovakia, and Nevada.

Crown Jewels

Opal necklace has symbolized hope, innocence and purity through the ages. During the Middle Ages, fair-haired young women put sapphires in their tresses to protect the lovely blond color of their hair. Physicians ground opals into a powder that was ingested to ward off nightmares.

Since the 14th century, many cultures have considered this stone to be an Eye Stone, a stone that watches over royal families as well as a stone that strengthens the eyesight. They believed it to be the "king of gems" because an opal holds within its fire all the colors of the rainbow...and all other gems, as well. And like many birthstones, opals were treasured by ancient monarchs for their appearance AND their powers.

Opals were routinely set into the crowns and necklaces of rulers who believed the protective powers of the gemstones would ward off evil. Writers of the period believed the opal could render its wearer invisible when the need arose.

The Russians had the complete opposite belief in opals, viewing them as nothing but bad luck..

Always the Right Gift

A gift of Opal is symbolic of faithfulness and confidence. And the wide range of choices in opal make them a perfect gift for anyone:

Black Opal - the stone has a dark body tone in comparison to a white opal.

White Opal - also known as 'milky opal', featuring light white body tones

Boulder Opal - very dark and beautiful in color

Crystal Opal - any opal with a transparent or semi-transparent body tone. Forms of crystal opal include black crystal and white crystal.

Fire Opal - an American term meaning any opal that displays a significant amount of red coloring. Mexican fire opal is a different kind of opal, which displays orange coloring)

Opal Jewelry - The Ultimate Collection

Opal is a brilliant gemstone whose shades embrace just about every hue of color imaginable. Each stone portrays a different color scheme making it truly unique and marvelous to look at. This one fact along with the beautiful and shimmering hues of color the opal produces makes this one of the most collectible and magnificent gemstones in the world today. Because of its distinct and entrancing qualities, opal jewelry is highly sought after by collectors and fashion enthusiasts, as well as people from all walks of life looking for a dazzling and intriguing gemstone.

The opal ring has a long history full of superstitious beliefs and myths. Many cultures from around the world believe that the opal is magical and brings the owner good fortune. Opal jewelry worn by the ancient Romans symbolized purity and hope and it was thought to bring its wearer good luck. In ancient Greece, opal jewelry was believed to give its wearer the ability to prophesize and foresee the future. The ancient Greeks also believed that the opal brought about good luck and fortune to its wearer. However, the opal was not always thought of as a good luck symbol. in 19th century Europe, the opal was believed to have been the official stone of both thieves and robbers. It was also believed that bad luck would follow the person who possessed such a stone. To fuel these myths even further, in the 19th century novel "Anne of Geierstein", by Sir Walter Scott the opal was unjustly labeled as the gemstone that caused misfortune and bad luck to its owners. Either way, the opal has a long history behind it and has caused a lasting impression on a society that has idolized its marvelous qualities for years.

Today, opal jewelry has gained a very broad following by people interested in its brilliance and beauty as a jewelry piece. The popularity of opal jewelry is once again on the rise as many have become entranced by the magnificent color displays that the opal produces. Although the opal is classified as a semi-precious stone, some varieties of the opal are extremely rare and expensive.

People throughout time have been fascinated and captured by the iridescent colors of opal jewelry. Good luck or bad luck notwithstanding, these multicolored gemstones are worthy and desirable additions to any wardrobe. A person should not be blamed for thinking that wearing opal jewelry, whether it is a necklace, a bracelet, earrings or a ring is in many way just like having a piece of a rainbow close to the skin.

Iridescent Opal

Imagine holding a magical stone in your hand that would show you all the colors of the rainbow in just one look. I am sure you will agree that vision can be overwhelming. Opal is just that. A gem found mainly in the mining areas of South Australia and very few from Nevada to Czechoslovakia among others, opal exhibits a wide range of colors giving the impression that you are looking at rainbow colors up close. The first opal mines, however, were discovered in what is now Eastern Slovakia, but their source has long since dried up. But if you want fire opal, these are mostly found in Mexico. White, also known as milky opal, and black are very common in Australia.

Opal is best known as the birthday stone for those born in October and is often given as a gift to celebrate 14 years of marriage. Napoleon Bonaparte allegedly gave his wife Josephine an opal "The Burning of Troy" as a gift.

As with other gemstones, opal symbolizes many ancient beliefs, which today may still be considered such symbols by real lovers of gemstones. The Greeks, for example, believed that the opal gave the wearer the ability to have scientific or foresight - the ability to see into the future. The Romans, on the other hand, believed that opal was a symbol of hope and purity, so they wore opal for their crowns. They also believe that it prevents diseases and infections. During the Middle Ages, people wore opal because they believed that it could be useful in their eyes. Some even believe that once you wear it, you will be invisible! Worse still, some 14th-century cultures considered the opal to be "Eye Stone" because they believed it to look after them, especially royalties. Some even think that it rules over all the precious stones because of its ability to absorb all the colors of the rainbow. Ancient Arab mythology believes that opals received their various colors in lightning from heaven, believing that opals fell from the sky. Although popular, opal lost its “charm” when a well-read novel was portrayed as opal as an unlucky stone. But discrimination did not last, and opal gained its popularity among the collectors' circle and possibly all the treasurers.
