Myths of jewelry and Lore

Opal Earrings have kept people happy and enticed for centuries. Legends have flourished all over the world and have followed these gems to this day. These legends and myths have only served to reinforce the interest of the gemstones.

Think of a picture you remember when talking about Hope Diamond. Many of the people associated with this beautiful green diamond have died under unusual circumstances and are said to carry a curse. Many other opal rings for women have stories and legends similar to Themba's.

Diamond Legends

Hope Diamond is probably the most famous gemstone. It has a reputation for bringing disaster to its owner. It shows red under uvlight and has a blue-gray under natural light. The stone is said to be re-engraved from the larger stone to its present state. The Smithsonian Institute is yours. The famous jeweler, Harry Winston, donated it to the Smithsonian, and interestingly, the gem was sent to the Smithsonian Institute in an empty brown box by the United States Post Office. Hope Diamond is not the Heart of the Ocean mentioned in the film Titanic as some claim. Hope Diamond was not on the Titanic.

Most of us have a Taylor-Burton Opal Wedding Ring in 69 carats it was Richard Burton's 40-year gift to Elizabeth Taylor. He sold the stone in 1978 to pay for a hospital in Botswana. He still has another gift, the Krupp Diamond, 33.19 carats.

At 530.20 carats, Cullinan I is the largest cut diamond in the world. It was cut along with a number of other stones from 3106 carat Cullinan diamond crystal.

Pearl Legends

Perhaps the most famous story of pearls was about Cleopatra. He is said to have bet Mark Anthony that he could have a more expensive party. To do so, he melted a large pearl earring into vinegar and drank it.

The early Romans thought that pearls were created as a drop of water falling between layers of oysters. The Persians had a myth that the pearl was created where the rainbow meets the earth.

Opal Myths

The Aborigines (Indigenous Australians) believe that the ancestors to mark their existence were left behind after opal. Some groups feel that Opal has brought them fire. Another local legend suggests that Muda, in the form of a vulture, created the Cooper stream. He died at the discovery of opals and the fish in his bag turned into opals.

Emerald Myths

Emeralds were considered medicinal in the past. Legend has it that by the 3rd century, emeralds were used to rest eyes and to make snakes blind. In Arabia, emeralds were thought to melt snakes' eyes. Other uses of emeralds were used to treat diarrhea, stomach problems, and even diabetes.

It was thought that the Holy Grail was engraved on the road to Satan's crown. The Incas and the Aztecs thought that emeralds were a sacred stone. It has also been suggested that emeralds may offer royal offspring to the common people.

Emeralds are a type of corundum and myths abound about their power and history, but Rubies are also corundum, and few if any myths follow Rubies.

Opal Engagement Rings - An Excellent Option for a Great Impression

Now that you have found the woman you want to spend the rest of your life with, it's time to propose her. Without any doubt you want to hear a loud 'yes' with her eyed lighting up on seeing the ring you carry for that momentous occasion. Of course, you'll need to do your homework for this once in a lifetime moment by looking for a romantic place, rehearsing for that awesome way of proposing her and finding the most important item that tastefully declares her to be your fiancĂ©, yes, the engagement ring!

The choice of engagement rings is no more limited to diamonds only. Creative opal jewelrys are using the large variety of gems pouring in from different countries to offer an amazing variety of rings having great designs and diverse hues. With so many of startling gemstones available, why follow the beaten track?

Opal rings seem to be a very popular option these days. The best opal is produced in Australia and some of the best opal engagement rings are also crafted in Australia. If you were thinking to come up with something less traditional, opal might be for you. But beware! Because these rings are highly priced, many vendors are taking advantage by offering low quality fakes to uninformed clients. Only expert and experienced jewelers can make out a fake from a real one.

Here are a few tips that will help you purchase an opal engagement ring that your beloved would love flaunting around to her friends:

Look for a great sparkle - On looking through the gemstone from different angles, you'll see many shining colors, though the color of the stone is solid black. This is among the most important characteristics that distinguish opal from other stones. This jewel really has gripping hues.

Choose a good weight - Just like in the case of opal necklace

, the measuring unit for opal is also the carat. The price of opal is directly proportionate to its weight. Holding the jewel in your hand try to feel its weight and see if it's heavy enough for being considered authentic.

High price doesn't necessarily mean high quality - The market price of opal is decided by its weight and sparkle. However, price of the ring is no guarantee for the quality of the stone you may be inclined to buy. Keep these points in mind while selecting an opal engagement ring.

Get it from a reputed jeweler - It always helps to deal with a reputed dealer. Though you may be required to pay a bit more, you can't overlook the fact that the jeweler earned his clients' trust over number of years. They successfully established a rapport with their clients. It's not easy to build reputation in such trades, especially. These jewelers are always willing to help clients choose the most appropriate piece that matches their choice and budget.

Do some research - Though it's important to deal with reputed dealers, don't depend on just one reliable store. Spend time going through the catalogs of various stores that you can locate and mark your favorites. This would ensure that you won't regret having missed buying a ring with superior color and design.

Necklaces of the Renaissance Period

The Renaissance began in Italy during the 1300's, it spread to England, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, and other countries during the 1400's and ending in the early 1600's. This movement was considered a rebirth of the ancient works of art, literature, and philosophy. The Europeans studied these three endeavors of ancient Greece and Rome following the great scholars and artists, becoming themselves great in continuing and even advancing these areas. This movement reached a height in the 1400's and the early 1500's when achievements had become some of the greatest in history.

During the Renaissance jewelers achieved breakthroughs in shop tools, working areas, methods, and advanced techniques. Successful artists came from serving in strict apprenticeships or grew up working with family or close friends in the trade. Black opal ring was in high demand during this period in history. In Florence, Italy there were over forty shops dedicated to producing the finest opal jewelry the world had yet ever seen. The style before the Renaissance was called Gothic which was thought to have expelled all of the possible works from it and had given in to the new more elaborate style.

During the end of the fifteenth century western Europe had become united in many ways and artists freely traveled about expanding their craft. During this time of international freedom, French, Spanish, Italian, German, and Hungarian jewelers developed their style at an equal pace. This made it difficult sometimes to distinguish from which country the jewelry was made during the Renaissance period. Italy was considered one of the greatest at the time for many forms of art including jewelry. Throughout Europe, Italian jewelers were sought for their advanced techniques and amazing methods for extracting the finest detail.

The technique at the time was very disciplined and defined. The overall piece would often have a central theme with incredible detail and precision. The designs would be incredible stretches of the imagination, ships, galleons, mermaids, mermen, salamanders, sea horses, and cupids would be laced with beautiful opal diamond ring and other precious gems. Brooches, pendants, and ropes were sculpted from onyx, silver, gold and laced with pearls, opals, and rubies. Necklaces were normally made to end part way around the neck with looped ends and linking done with threading applied to backings in some cases. A necklace with a pendant was called en suite. Portraits were carved with babies and angels, sculpted with such fine detail as to the point of miraculous. Irregular pearls called baroque would be set in a design that made their unusual shape flow and become a necessary part of the piece. Diamonds were often fashioned into triangular chips embellishing the piece with extraordinary beauty.

During this time gems were thought to contain special powers for the body, so these were designed into the piece to touch the skin. Salamanders were said to represent passionate love and cupids were often times given as gifts to enhance a special meeting. An interesting note, Queen Elizabeth enjoyed animal jewels and had various ones in her collection including greyhound, scorpion, turtledove, and dolphin.

Output of South German and Hungarian mines worked at a fevered pitch to meet the massive demand for gold in this period. The Hungarian mines also produced opals and precious stones which were also imported from the Oriental regions. Sea coral was used for carving which came from off the shores of Italy.

In the making of the pieces casting was performed, many times in two or more sections or portions. After casting, various pieces were put into different combinations bringing about different designs. Opaque white enameling would be done with care as to not completely cover all the metal. Carefully applying enamel to recessed areas with deep cuts or cells of metal then sanding the metal down to the level of the enamel was called champleve'. Adhesive used for precious gems was black wax. The wax was used if metal drawn over or embracing the precious stone detracted from the overall design of what the artist envisioned. There were a few methods used for making tiny sculptures. Some of these included wax modeling which was accomplished then careful casting of the tiny art piece then melting out the wax. Small sheet metal shaping and pressing was also done if the piece required it.

Opal Rings were the most popular, then pendants, and then necklaces. Pendants were worn by men, women, and children. Men and children wore them around the neck. Women wore them around the neck or pinned or tied with ribbon on the dress or sleeve.

Different Types of Earrings

Opal Earrings are one of the most popular types of jewellery and can be found in an amazing variety of styles, colours and designs. You can get expensive earrings that contain precious stones such as real pearls or diamonds, along with gold or silver settings. There are medium priced earrings made with semi-precious stones such as garnet, topaz or opals and there are cheap earrings that are made from glass and metals. All of them look good and the cheaper ones probably allow a greater variety in colour and style as they are not dependent of the type of gem to give colour or shape.

Whether you prefer expensive, medium or cheap jewellery you can get many different styles in either class. Studs are a popular choice and suit many face shapes; simple rings are another choice for many people. You can also easily find earrings that are longer and dangle quite a way from the end of the ear. Most earrings these days are made to go through pierced ears, however, for those who have never had their ears pierced and prefer not to, there are clasp earrings that simply clip to the lobe of the ear.

The style of earrings you choose depends on much more than your budget. The shape of your face and your hairstyle should also be taken into account as well as the outfit you intend to wear them with. If you want earrings for evening wear you would usually choose something sparkly that suits your outfit. Many evening dresses are quite revealing at the neckline and this allows you to wear longer earrings that could not be worn in the daytime with a neckline that may be higher. In fact, long earrings cannot be worn with really high collars.

Long earrings are eminently suited to a hairstyle that is up-swept rather than one with long hair around the ears. Such a hairdo will actually hide the beauty of dangling earrings and you risk getting the hair tangled up with the stud at the back of the ear, as well as with the strands at the front. However longer earrings that are made with a wide ring or two can enhance long hair and are less likely to get tangled up.

People with long thin faces should not wear long thin earrings as they will only accentuate this feature.

Those with round or wide faces can benefit from long thin earrings, or small studs. Of course those with an oval face can wear almost any style of earrings. If you have a large bone structure you can flaunt chunky style earrings to your heart's content; those with small facial structures should choose earrings that will not dominate their face.

If you have earrings made of real diamonds or pearls, you need to be sure that you only fix them on after your hair is completely done; otherwise sprays such as hairspray and deodorant build up on the stone and take away the sparkle. It can also damage the surface of the stone.

A few Tips on How to Clean Your Precious Earrings

Clean opal earrings are always attractive. Learning to clean your earrings is not a difficult task. There are several methods and solutions for how to clean your jewelry today. You can clean them with a small machine called an ultrasonic cleaner.

Perhaps the easiest opal ring solution is to take a bowl of warm water, add a small amount of detergent, then gently rinse the earrings with a scrub brush, then rinse with water and dry with a damp cloth.  These two elements combined will produce foam and by leaving your earrings in it for 5 minutes, the foam will clean the earrings.

In case you would like to clean your precious earrings with jewelry solutions made of jewelry, you have a huge variety of products to choose from. Purifying gold and platinum earrings is like cleaning silver earrings separately: you do not need to use any household ammonia. In addition to the various cleaning solutions you can also buy cleaning cloths which are also a good option. Just rub the jewelry with these fabrics and they will turn out beautiful and clean as well.

There are several types of machines available on the market today that use high frequency sound to clean your earrings in a few minutes. These ultrasonic cleaners are the perfect solution to your problem if you do not have the time or willingness to clean with different types of jewelry solutions.

Diamonds can be cleaned regularly with any commercially available jewelery or soft washcloth. Diamonds are classified as the strongest materials known on Earth but holes and other materials used to enrich them can be removed with solid cleaning materials and hard scrubs. You can use a diamond refining solution on many gemstones without soft gems, such as emeralds and opals. Diamonds can withstand many chemicals, but unfortunately metal jewelry cannot and will not be damaged by them.

If you are looking for a way to clean your jewelry but are not sure what kind of metal your jewelry is, then you should do a little research before trying anything. Cleaning is important not only for wearing clean earrings but also for restoring the beauty and luster of earrings with precious and non-precious stones.

Iridescent Opal

Imagine holding a magical stone in your hand that would show you all the colors of the rainbow in just one look. I am sure you will agree that vision can be overwhelming. Opal is just that. A gem found mainly in the mining areas of South Australia and very few from Nevada to Czechoslovakia among others, opal exhibits a wide range of colors giving the impression that you are looking at rainbow colors up close. The first opal mines, however, were discovered in what is now Eastern Slovakia, but their source has long since dried up. But if you want fire opal, these are mostly found in Mexico. White, also known as milky opal, and black are very common in Australia.

Opal is best known as the birthday stone for those born in October and is often given as a gift to celebrate 14 years of marriage. Napoleon Bonaparte allegedly gave his wife Josephine an opal "The Burning of Troy" as a gift.

As with other gemstones, opal symbolizes many ancient beliefs, which today may still be considered such symbols by real lovers of gemstones. The Greeks, for example, believed that the opal gave the wearer the ability to have scientific or foresight - the ability to see into the future. The Romans, on the other hand, believed that opal was a symbol of hope and purity, so they wore opal for their crowns. They also believe that it prevents diseases and infections. During the Middle Ages, people wore opal because they believed that it could be useful in their eyes. Some even believe that once you wear it, you will be invisible! Worse still, some 14th-century cultures considered the opal to be "Eye Stone" because they believed it to look after them, especially royalties. Some even think that it rules over all the precious stones because of its ability to absorb all the colors of the rainbow. Ancient Arab mythology believes that opals received their various colors in lightning from heaven, believing that opals fell from the sky. Although popular, opal lost its “charm” when a well-read novel was portrayed as opal as an unlucky stone. But discrimination did not last, and opal gained its popularity among the collectors' circle and possibly all the treasurers.

Opal is Australia's National Gemstone

If we say that the Australian gemstone opal should not be taken lightly. Australia has more deposits of minerals and gemstones than any other country in the world. The material has been discovered on other continents but our mining operations are relatively new compared to the rest of the world.

If you think Australia has diamonds, rubies, emeralds, sapphires and almost every little gem to choose opal to represent the country is very important.

Opal ring was first discovered and mined in the early 1800's and mainly by European miners who were financially poor but knew how to work hard and were able to withstand harsh physical conditions. They stop to get rich. Sometimes they do and live here in Australia.

So you might think that Australians of all ages and genders are very familiar with opals and know everything about them. Well, you would have to look in your mother's jewelry box for opals, would you? However, that is not the case at all.

Australians do not know much about opals at all. Most of them have never seen one. If I asked ten women in Sydney if they had opal in their jewelry box I would be surprised if one of them really did.

Why is this so? Opal is an Australian export market and simple. You will find thousands of beautiful opals in tourist jewelry stores in major Australian centers but the Aussies do not go looking for tourist shops because we are not tourists in our country.

Australian men have never worn the most traditional jewelry and gemstones ever on the agenda. It is changing now but slowly. Australian women also traditionally did not wear much jewelry in the past. Yes, our women hold the whole world and wear a lot of jewelry today, but is it too late for opal? I do not know the answer to that!

But one thing is for sure that the whole world loves our gem of the country and wears it freely in all kinds of opal jewelry: opal earrings, opal pendants, rings and bracelets.

Opal Jewelry

Australian Opal is the largest producer of opals in the world, producing 95% of the world's opals of opal jewelry and most of them in Australia are produced in the area called Coober Pedy. Balance comes from places like Mexico, northern Brazil the US and even Africa.

In 1849 the first blocks of Opal were accidentally found in an Australian cattle station called Tarravilla. the first Opal explorers began in 1890 at White Cliff to dig Opal stones. And even today the eyes of Opal lovers are bright when someone talks about places like White Cliffs, Lightning Ridge, Andamooka or Coober Pedy: because these are popular sites for Australian Opal camps. The most famous is probably Lightning Ridge, the site of the coveted Black Opal. Andamooka, where Crystal Opal and Light Opal are brought in daylight, the cam boasts the location where Opal was probably the largest, weighing 6,843 pounds, "The Andamooka Desert Flame ".

Coober Pedy is, by the way, a word from the Aboriginal language meaning "white man in the pit". This clearly explains how Opal was actually mined: many Opal explorers made their home in deep pits or caves, to protect themselves from the scorching heat of the day and the frigid night air. They usually worked only on tolls as a pick and shovel. Buckets full of soil, hopefully containing Opal stones, were pulled to a depth of 5 to 40 feet in deep holes by hand, because this is the depth of Opal that contains cracks and holes, also dug today.

Being an Opal prospector is no longer an easy task, although today there are some technologies available, such as trucks or conveyor belts. And the prospect of enjoying a lifetime of good things in life attracts many men and women to Australia's hot, dusty region.

Mineraloid opal is an amorphous hydrated silicon dioxide, the water content of which is sometimes 20 percent higher but usually between 3 and 10 percent. Opal ranges from colorless to white, blue, gray, red, yellow, green, brown and black. Normal opal is really amorphous, but precious opal has a structural feature. The word opal comes from the Sanskrit pala, the Greek word opallios, and the Latin opalus, meaning "precious stone".

Opal mineraloid gel is subjected to low temperatures and can occur in cracks in almost any type of rock, commonly found with limonite, sandstone, rhyolite, and basalt.

Opal is another mineraloid that can form or replace fossils.

Australian Opal Buying Guide

We love the color variety in Australian opal. It is a very special stone that can reflect any color in the spectrum. We value all types, and we carefully choose which stone will look best in a progressive piece. The type of setting will determine the quality of the stone we use; Low-grade silver opal, as well as fine gold or platinum settings.

Opal is found in many places, including the United States, but 90% of the supply comes from Australia. In that case, 2% is boulder opal, which makes it very valuable and very expensive. Opal is found in limited availability in a few different countries in the US; Idaho, Arizona, and Nevada. Mexico produces a type of transparent opal often called opal "fire" which is a distinct class of light stone without the color play seen in Australian opal. We prefer the Australian opal with its unique depth and appearance.

The shiny, shiny pieces of opal you see in the finest double-glazed opal, small opal sheets covered over potch opal or something else. This achieves the bright light you usually see in opal jewelry, with small details. This type of opal has a much lower cost than stone. Opal doublet really captures attention and is the best value for money. The third step down would be a triplet, which is a doublet with something clear on the surface, such quartz. This layer helps protect the stone, but is usually reserved for low quality opal.

When choosing opal and opal jewelry you want to look at the depth of color. A red or yellow glow appears to dance underneath, giving the stone a thicker effect. The best examples can be light or dark color, but they will have a depth of color in them that distinguishes them from cheap stones. The best stones have more red and yellow throughout the stone, and you want to look at the stone around to see how the colors play in the light. The best quality stones will have that discsence in all viewing angles. We love to use opal for our Asheville handmade jewelry.

Australian opal rings have some of the most unique properties of any colored gemstones available. We hope you enjoy the opal in all its forms and find somewhere in your collection of this beautiful stone.

Australian Opal - Primer

What has attracted people to opals over the centuries? Color, color and more color! Opals change color when viewed from different angles and angles. Sometimes it is a little too light and you shake your head and suddenly an amazing explosion of glowing color glows on the stone. Very few natural gemstones do that.

Unless you are lucky enough to pay more the quality improves. But you can still get high-gloss colors at low prices if you buy double or triple. These are pieces of opal reinforced with strong support of colorless opal. The triplet has a clear dome of quartz or other material on the surface.

Opal ring starts as a silica gel that penetrates into the sedimentary strata and gradually hardens over millions of years and the natural process. As an opal miner I have seen opal in this early stage where it is soft. Opals contain a high water content of between 3 and 10 percent. Moh's hardness level is around 5.5 to 6.5 and that is soft.

Australian opals are divided into several groups:

Black opal from the Lightning Ridge area of NSW.

White opals and light opals come from the Coober Pedy region in South Australia. These species also occur in pristine areas such as Mintabie and Andamooka.

Boulder opals from Queensland.

Then there are other small areas that produce small amounts of high quality opal.

Black opal with a black base and white opal with a white base while Boulder has more opal or through an ironstone base.

Then find the different levels of darkness you can say. So you might find an opal from Lightning Ridge or Coober Pedy with a gray base. That means the stone has a bright red or blue glow or other colors mixed within the base gray. This gray base can be light gray or almost black. When it reaches a very dark color we often call it black opal. It's like the marbles of the kids you see.

Then we get Crystal opal. Crystal is clear but colors can jump at you from this clear, see basic. We also have different levels of crystal opal. If we can clearly see through the crystal we will be distinguishing it as a semi crystal.

How much does it cost? It is very difficult to say what opal is worth. We can measure and measure but that does not help until we are able to determine the quality. We look for the best pattern in opal, bright color and very bright color. Red is often the most expensive color. However, a small, strong green stone will have more control than a dark, dark red stone. Since all opal is very different from the following it is a personal opinion.

What Are Opal Combined Products

Opal earrings are expensive and opal miners and opal cutters like to make even the smallest or very small opal stone into something to sell and look good in jewelry.

The opal cutter starts with a piece of opal and wishes to make it a specific shape, often oval, but there will be unusual shapes such as a triangle and small chips left over so that these small pieces are polished as. well in the hope that they can be sold as chips that will be used to make jewelry in some way.

However sometimes a good piece of opal will be so thin that it will split if we use it in a ring or in other pieces of jewelry. In that case the tailor could attach a piece of ordinary opal, called a potch, to the back of it and this would strengthen it so that it could set the jewelry. These two pieces of opal that are glued together are now called another thing - doublet and another name for that is the opal product. Some people like to call it a solid opal but no matter how you think about it you cannot escape the fact that it is doublet. Twice as much value than solid opal.

Sometimes a small piece of opal is so thin that even supporting it to tighten it is not enough for the cutter to place a third piece on the first two. This third piece is usually a clear quartz or maybe glass or other clear object.Triplets are worth less than double.

The mosaics are made by very patient and talented people who find brightly colored opal chips and glue them together in intricate patterns and make them into jewelry or curtains hanging on the wall. They are usually very nice and cheap as most of them come from the artists of the cottage industry.

Opal compounds are a great way to use what would be good pieces of opal that could not be discarded. And they are a great way for everyone to afford a piece of opal jewelry.
